Why Recall Nicolaides?

As a resident of Calgary-Bow, you expect your MLA to put your concerns first. Like many others, you feel you haven’t been listened to and that Nicolaides continues to act against your interests. A recall petition was filed after many neighbours shared similar frustrations with MLA Nicolaides’ actions, including his failure to consult with constituents or experts while administering the responsibilities he committed to as your representative. Since then, you and fellow Bow residents watch as several core provincial systems deteriorate, not only within his Education portfolio, but across all other areas that matter in everyday life.

While signing the recall petition, many Calgary-Bow constituents have noted the following areas of importance.

A MLA who listens and responds to constituents

As an elector and resident of Calgary-Bow, you should expect your representative to fulfill his obligations as your Member of the Legislative Assembly; thirteen principles you may expect are listed here

A MLA who fights for quality public education and childcare

As Minister for Education and Childcare, MLA Nicolaides is responsible for your child’s education. Like others, you may have been negatively impacted by recent policy decisions. Not only has he directed an increased percentage of taxpayer dollars to private school funding, his policies are also deprioritizing public childcare, creating issues of affordability for many Alberta families. Learn more about the impact Nicolaides’ has had on education and childcare in Alberta.

A MLA who prioritizes the needs of constituents

As a resident of Calgary-Bow you voted in 2023 with the understanding that: the moratorium on coal mining would remain intact; an Alberta Police Force would not be pursued; public healthcare would be prioritized; the Canadian Pension Plan would prevail; evidence would guide decision-making, and the free market would rein. Learn more about Nicolaides’ record on these key issues.

A MLA who believes in the independence of post-secondary institutions

Under Nicolaides’ tenure, as the Minister for Advanced Education, universities, colleges, and trade, you saw a substantial reduction in provincial funding and institutional autonomy. Learn more about Nicolaides’ handling of the advanced education portfolio.

A MLA who respects your rights and freedoms

This recall is about restoring real democracy: citizens, workers’ and professionals rights and responsibilities in Calgary-Bow, and Alberta. You expect your MLA to acknowledge your lived experience, and make decisions guided by the voices of the people, like you, who call Calgary-Bow home.  You expect your constitutional rights to be respected and upheld. Learn more here.

The Goal

16,006 verified signatures are required by January 21, 2026. When you, and enough of your neighbours and friends sign, a recall vote will be triggered, giving Calgary-Bow an opportunity to remove MLA Nicolaides from his post. An effective representative answers to the people he serves, not to party elites. Your signature provides the opportunity to hold Nicolaides to account for not effectively representing us.
